Ones to Watch

I had the recent honor of being nominated for Chicago Social Interiors "Ones To Watch - 2009".

I was thrilled and very humbled to be included among a group of 8 extremely talented interior designers working in and around Chicago.

It seemed to me to be a very good sign of things to come; especially given that I had only launched my company 6 months prior.
The nomination and votes came by way of associates in the industry who I work along side every day. People I've known for years (many whom I've come to call friends) who are so good at their jobs, that it makes mine easier.
I think that's what made this recognition so special.
They took time out of their hectic days to stop and acknowledge something in me that made me worth "watching".

While I didn't actually win, it was, as they say - a huge honor just to be nominated.
I hope to continue to produce work worthy of watching in the years to come.
Thanks guys!

Ongoing love affair...

I stopped in for, what I thought would be, a brief run-through at Golden Triangle today.  An hour later - I was still roaming around, marveling at the wonderful collection Doug Van Tress and the crew have assembled.
The new-ish space, at 330 N. Clark, is amazing.  Everything is well thought out, and the configuration of each vignette leaves you wanting to know what's at each turn.

Chinese and Thai antiques, pared down modern case pieces, French industrial lighting, and a nice upholstered line - Tru -  by my friend Steve Koch.
Man, I had almost forgotten how much I LOVE this place.  Found some wonderful pieces for several projects - and even more in the way of inspiration with things that I hope to soon have the opportunity to use.

In my own backyard!

It's always a totally enjoyable, design-centric experience when I get to spend time with my dear friend and fellow Interior Designer, Krista Ignasak.
Two days ago, we met up for lunch and the opportunity to discuss the mundane side of the business:  Accounting.
After crunching numbers and nerding-out for a couple of hours, I decided to take her a mile away, into Riverside, Illinois - a great suburb of Chicago - to a restaurant that I've been to several times before.
Riverside is a small, wonderful enclave of superb architecture and landscaping.  Riverside is arguably one of the first planned communities in the United States, designed in 1869 by Frederick Law Olmstead - the man responsible for the planning and layout of Central Park in NYC, and most of the Chicago World's Fair in 1893.
As we were walking down the street, we came across Higgins Glass Studio.  Apparently in Riverside for the last 60 years, Higgins had an amazing collection of decorative and functional, hand-blown, hand-pieced glass.
We both stopped in our tracks when we saw a collection of brightly colored Rondelays, in circles and squares, hanging in their window.  Each glass piece linked to the ones around it with a copper fastener.  The result was a beautiful and fun, drape / partition / wall art piece, each one-of-a-kind.
Each Rondelay was sold individually, so you could purchase as few or as many as you need.  We both fell in love with the idea of using these in an entry window, kitchen window, or anywhere that privacy isn't an absolute necessity.
